~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Esther and Len Wolfer learned that their son, Stuart, was being redeployed to Iraq in January 2008 they wanted to show their support for him. Knowing personally the importance of being able to communicate with one's child stationed overseas they began to look for ways to volunteer their efforts to benefit both soldiers and their state side families.
The Cell Phones For Soldiers program started in April 2004 by 13-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her 12-year-old brother, Robbie, of Norwell, Massachusetts. By collecting and recycling used cell phones, CP4S turns the funds received from the re-cellular company into prepaid calling cards for soldiers to use to call home.
The Wolfers realized the value of frequent communication with their son as every phone call was a reassuring signal that he had survived another day. They recognized the goals the Cell Phones For Soldiers Organization was working for and in September 2007 registered to become an authorized depository center.
To date, MSAWI has collected 8,900 cell phones (yielding over 500,000 calling card minutes for Troops to call home) from public and parochial schools, a University, synagogues, churches, country clubs, communities, independent living facilities, businesses, friends and family. People across the United States have become their biggest supporters for sending cell phones and spreading the goals of CP4S to honor the memory of Stuart.
Do you know someone serving overseas who would like to receive a calling card. Please complete the REQUEST FORM ONLINE! Each card provides 45-60 minutes of talk time.
